Just a boat’s ride away on Lake Erie
We planned to spend one of our 3 days on Kelley’s Island in Ohio. There are a couple of different ways to get there…. you can ride over on the ferry or the Jet Express. We wanted to take our car over…so we opted for the ferry.
Getting there wasn’t a cheap adventure for 6 people. I can’t remember exact numbers now, but it was over $100 for the 6 of us plus a car to go over. We decided to take it knowing the parking to leave the car was also expensive. I want to say it was an extra $30 to take the car. But….unless you are an avid biker (which I am not!) or want to spend $25/hour on a golf cart…then it is well worth it.
We got there and drove around exploring the island first. Then we decided to go check out the glacial grooves that Kelley’s Island is famous for. That was really cool looking at those formations!
We then headed to the beach. We had our dog Gizzy with us and after we were all settled back in the back of the beach we saw a sign saying no dogs. The kids were out in the water.. I just kept Giz on the towel with me quiet. Then someone told us there was a dog beach just the next beach over. We took her over there…the beach was not nearly as nice ….but she went for a first swim….Kids kept carrying her back out. She swam great..but didn’t like it at all.
We went to lunch next. I wanted to go to this really cute looking beachy restaurant I had seen on our tour that morning. We went back and thought we’d be fine with Gizzy since there was outside seating. Nope…said no dogs allowed. So we went back to a place called Buckeye cafe. Great food there. We had a pizza and Dave and Z had subs.
After lunch we did some fishing …caught a few little fish. But it was so hot! Great day! I would recommend Kelley’s Island. I would have to say that I would recommend it without your dog (just my personal thought). It has things to do, but is a family oriented, quiet island without too much commercialism on it. There are a couple resorts on the island and many Bed & Breakfasts so you can stay overnight there also.
Here is a video review of our visit to Kelley’s Island, Ohio. (Please not there is music on the video, so you might need to turn your volume down depending on where you are watching it.)
