Looking for some underground adventure in Ohio?
Then look no further than the Ohio Caverns in West Liberty, Ohio! Dave and I were looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon. We didn’t have the kids but we still used the book Kids Love Ohio for reference. (It really is not just for adventures with your kids).
I have lived here all my life and had never been to the Ohio Caverns. So we made the drive and I am really glad we did. I wasn’t able to take any videos in the caverns…but I could take pictures.
The grounds are beautiful, and there is a very nice gift shop before you take your tour. Outside is an area that you can pay and mine for gems. We didn’t do this, but when we take the kids back..we will let them have fun doing that.
This is a magnificent tour where you not only get to see some beautiful sites, but it is very educational for the kids (and adults!) They are opened all year (only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas days). You can check out their schedule and more information on their hours and rates page.
We paid $14 each for the regular tour. (there is a historical tour also) Children ages 5-12 are $8. Ages 4 and under are free.
The tour was 1 mile long and took us about 50 minutes. The historic tour is a little longer. There are season passes also.

This is my hometown! I’ve been to the Caverns several times, as well as to the grounds for many, many different events. When I was in school (a loooonnnggg time ago) it was all the rage to be a tour guide for the Caverns in the summer – it was a highly coveted job! I agree, it’s one of those places that you don’t really know about but should. Thanks for reviewing it and letting the people know!
Thanks for the article on this wonderful Ohio destination!
thanks Julie! How fun. I felt bad for our guide. There were 2 little ones throwing fits at the front of the line. The one was scared…the other just not a happy camper all the way around. She tried to talk over them. But the parents finally took them to the back of the line and that helped out a great deal. I remember thinking that there was so much information that the guides needed to learn.
(we visited the castles too…I’ll be doing a review on them before long.)
Your welcome Roger!
Great sound effects on your video. I felt like I was inside the cavern with you and then outside in the fresh air with the birds. Well done!
